| Subject: Hezbollah's Nasrallah urges Hariri tribunal boycott Fri Oct 29, 2010 6:00 pm | |
| Hassan Nasrallah has previously described the tribunal as part of an Israeli plot against Hezbollah The head of the Lebanese Islamist group Hezbollah has urged his countrymen to boycott the UN tribunal into the 2005 killing of former PM Rafik Hariri.
Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah accused the investigators of sending information to Israel.
He had previously described the tribunal as part of an Israeli plot against Hezbollah.
The tribunal has not yet said who will be indicted.

Nasrallah accuses Israel on ex-PM Hezbollah questioned over Hariri Who are Hezbollah? "I call on every Lebanese official and every citizen to boycott these investigators and not to co-operate with them," said the Hezbollah chief.
"All the information and data and addresses (they get) is sent to Israel."
"From now on, any co-operation with the international investigators will be (considered as) helping them to attack [Hezbollah]," he added, in a video-linked speech broadcast on Hezbollah's al-Manar television channel.
His comments came a day after two tribunal investigators were attacked by a group of angry women at a gynaecology clinic in a Hezbollah-controlled suburb of Lebanon's capital, Beirut.
Flagrant disregard Meanwhile the US ambassador to the UN accused Hezbollah and its allies, Syria and Iran, of endangering Lebanon's stability and independence.
Rafik Hariri was killed in a major car bomb in Beirut in 2005 "Syria especially has displayed flagrant disregard for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, unity and political independence of Lebanon," said Susan Rice after the UN Security Council held closed-door discussions on Lebanon.
She accused Syria of arming Lebanese militias, including Hezbollah, with increasingly sophisticated weapons. Syria rejected the allegations.
The special international tribunal into Hariri's assassination was set up under UN auspices to investigate the massive bomb explosion hit the magnate's motorcade in Beirut in February 2005, killing the former prime minister and 22 others.
At the time, many Lebanese blamed Syria, an ally of Hezbollah. Damascus denied the accusation but eventually the killing led to the withdrawal of its troops from Lebanon after a military occupation of 29 years.
'Pre-empting report' Mr Nasrallah has been accused of trying to pre-empt a UN report that is expected to implicate Hezbollah in the killing.
In August, he said he had evidence of Israeli involvement in the murder, including footage from Israeli spy planes of routes used by Mr Hariri.
But he said he would not hand the material to the investigating tribunal, saying he did not trust it.
The previous month, he said he had been told investigators would indict individuals from Hezbollah in the Hariri assassination, describing the tribunal as part of an Israeli plot against Hezbollah.
Last April, four Lebanese generals accused of Mr Hariri's murder were released from custody because the evidence against them was deemed to be insufficient.
In 2008, 100 people died in clashes between Hezbollah and supporters of Rafik Hariri's son Saad, now Lebanon's prime minister.

In pictures: Deadly fire in Israel Israel faces flak for forest fire response Foreign firefighting crews have begun to arrive in Israel to help battle a massive forest fire out of control in the north of the country.
Further global assistance is due to arrive later on Friday, as fire crews battled high winds driving the blaze towards the city of Haifa.
At least 41 people have died and scores have been injured in what is thought to be the country's largest forest fire.
At least 13,000 people, including prison inmates, have been evacuated.
Aircraft from Bulgaria, Jordan, Greece and the UK have arrived, after Israel issued a rare request for foreign assistance.

Jon Donnison BBC News, Israel In the Carmel mountains the air is thick with smoke. A strong sun, hot for December, struggles to break through. About 1km away flames can be seen licking the tree tops, driven on by a fierce wind.
From above comes the constant hum of aircraft as firefighting planes scoop water from the Mediterranean to dump on the blaze. Where the fire has already passed, the charred and blackened ground still smoulders.
Thousands are being forced to leave their homes and businesses. Some are being threatened with arrest if they don't leave.
They can be seen sitting by the road, staring across the valleys to where they once lived. They don't know what will be left when they return. Many here are already questioning the government's readiness for forest fires.
Planes from Cyprus, Turkey and Russia were on their way, while flame-retardant materials were being flown in from France, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said.
"The Russians are sending and we are waiting for the biggest firefighting plane in the world... an Antonov with huge firefighting capacity," he told Israel Radio.
He said he hoped the fire could be contained by Saturday.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the blaze as an "unprecedented disaster".
He convened an emergency session of the cabinet in Tel Aviv on Friday morning and afterwards thanked countries for their help.
"I think this symbolises an unprecedented response to our request for international help," he said.
Correspondents said he made a special point of thanking Turkey, which put aside recent diplomatic strains to send assistance.
Mr Netanyahu then left to visit the injured and inspect the firefighting effort.
Israeli media have criticised the government's lack of readiness.

Police spokesman: "Operation will continue over next 24 to 48 hours" Ben Caspit, a commentator in the Maariv daily, said: "A country above which hover spy satellites, a country to which foreign sources attribute chilling military operations... is also the country that has its firefighting material run out after seven hours, a country whose fire trucks date back to the previous century, and a country that therefore finds itself caught, standing before the flames, with its pants down."
Israel has been experiencing a period of drought, suffering its driest November in 60 years.
'Sad, incomprehensible day' Most of those killed in the blaze were prison guards travelling on a bus sent to help evacuate Damon prison.
The bus was trapped in the inferno by a fallen tree in the Carmel Mountains near Haifa - Israel's third largest city.
A fire brigade spokesman told the Jerusalem Post that the flames had travelled 1,500m (4,920ft) in less than three minutes.
"The bus had no chance. They tried to escape but were burned alive. It was a horrific scene," the spokesman told the newspaper.
He called it a "difficult, sad and incomprehensible day".
Sixteen people remain in hospital, including the police chief of Haifa, who is said to be in a critical condition. Three others were seriously injured, police said. There were no reported injuries among prison inmates.

Lula hails Rio police operation Brazil forces take over Rio slum The army in Brazil is to take on peacekeeping duties in the poor areas of Rio de Janeiro, which saw a week-long stand-off between security forces and drug dealers last month.
Soldiers will patrol the Alemao and Penha districts to ensure hundreds of drug traffickers who had made the areas their stronghold would not return.
Security forces arrested more than 100 people during their sweep of the area.
It will be the army's first peacekeeping mission within Brazil.
Defence Minister Nelson Jobim said the army would be able to draw on its years of experience heading the United Nation's peacekeeping mission in Haiti.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has approved the army's continued presence, which was requested by the governor of Rio state, Sergio Cabral.
He had earlier praised the joint police and military operation and promised it would only be the start of a campaign to rid Rio of drugs gangs.
The Alemao and Penha districts have been a stronghold of drugs traffickers and virtual no-go area for police for decades.

| Extra cost
Bernard McClure from the Driver Vehicle Agency said there were no plans to increase the cost of the test - but accepted it might cost more to prepare the vehicle.
"I wouldn't dispute that there may be some cost increase for motorists, but the essential issue here is road safety," he said.
